Historical Sites and Sacred Temples near Monaara Leisure, Anuradhapura

One of the most sacred and iconic stupas in Sri Lanka, Ruwanweli Seya was built by King Dutugemunu in the 2nd century BCE. With its massive white dome and golden pinnacle, this stupa is a symbol of Buddhist devotion and an architectural masterpiece of the Anuradhapura era. Pilgrims from across the world visit this sacred site to pay homage and experience its serene spiritual atmosphere.

Built by King Mahasena in the 3rd century CE, this colossal stupa is part of a vast monastic complex that housed thousands of monks. The site remains an impressive testament to Sri Lanka  engineering and architectural prowess.

Mirisawetiya Stupa, built by King Dutugemunu after his victory in battle, is an important historical and religious landmark. According to legend, the king left his royal spear containing sacred relics at the site before bathing, only to find it immovable upon his return. This led to the construction of the stupa, marking the location as a significant Buddhist pilgrimage site.

Once one of the most influential Buddhist monasteries in South Asia, Abhayagiri Monastery was home to thousands of monks and a center for Therawada and Mahayana Buddhism. Built in the 1st century BCE by King Valagamba, the towering stupa and surrounding ruins highlight the grandeur of Anuradhapura religious and scholarly past.

This massive ancient reservoir, measuring approximately 159 meters in length and 52 meters in width, was an essential water source for monks of the Abhayagiri Monastery. Named “Eth Pokuna” (Elephant Pond) due to its sheer size, the reservoir showcases the advanced hydrological knowledge of ancient Sri Lankan engineers.

The Sadakada Pahana, or moonstone, is a uniquely Sri Lankan architectural element found at the entrances of ancient Buddhist temples. This intricately carved semicircular stone represents the cycle of life, depicting lotus petals, animals, and flames, symbolizing the path to enlightenment. The artistry and detail in these carvings reflect the advanced craftsmanship of the Anuradhapura era.

This ancient stone bridge, built over the Malwathu Oya, is a marvel of ancient Sri Lankan engineering. The bridge, made of massive stone slabs, is believed to have been part of an important trade route connecting the capital city to other regions. Despite centuries of wear, remnants of this remarkable structure still stand today.

Located within the Isurumuniya temple complex, the so-called Star Gate is an intriguing site that has sparked curiosity among historians and archaeologists. Some believe it to be an ancient entrance of astrological or cosmic significance, while others see it as a unique architectural feature of the temple.

Tissa Wewa is an ancient reservoir built by King Devanampiyatissa in the 3rd century BCE to provide water for the city and its monasteries. Surrounded by lush greenery and offering picturesque sunsets, the reservoir remains a serene location for visitors seeking peace and tranquility.

Also known as Abhaya Wewa, this ancient tank is one of the oldest reservoirs in Sri Lanka, dating back to the reign of King Pandukabhaya in the 4th century BCE. This massive water body played a crucial role in sustaining the people of Anuradhapura and remains an important historical landmark.
